Agra is a beautiful city in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is situated on the banks of holy river Yamuna and is one of the most famous tourist destinations of India. Every year, millions of tourists from all over the world visit Agra to see the majestic Taj Mahal. Agra is a city with rich cultural heritage and art. Excellent Mughal architecture and their love for structural designs is evident all over Agra. During the reign of Akbar, Jehangir and Shah Jahan, the Agra was at its peak of glory. It is told that Akbar laid the foundation of the modern city. Most of the buildings in Agra were built during mid 16th century and 17th century. India trip is considered incomplete without a visit to Agra.

Getting there

Agra city is well connected and one can reach Agra through Air, Train and Road. Agra airport is at Kheria which is about 6 km from the city centre. Many airlines such as Indian Airlines, Indigo airlines operate from Agra and connect major cities including Delhi and other metros. Agra has three railway stations and a number of trains pass through Agra every day. One can either drive down to Agra or use public transport. The biggest bus stand of Agra is Idgah Bus stand. The city is connected to most of the bigger cities of North India. To visit Taj Mahal from New Delhi the buses leave frequently for Agra and the travel time is approx. 4.30 hrs. For local transport Auto Rikshaw or Cycle Rikshaw are very popular.

The Majestic Taj Mahal

Standing on the bank of River Yamuna is the magnificent Taj Mahal. It is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Taj Mahal is the mausoleum of King Shah Jahan’s wife Mumtaz Mahal. She died while accompanying her husband in Burhanpur after giving birth to their 14th child. After her death King Shah Jahan started the construction of Taj Mahal in 1631. The Taj Mahal was completed in 1653 at a cost of 32 million rupees. Shah Jahan’s grave was added to it later. It is made up of white marble and changes its shades with the sun light. To build the Taj Mahal, workers were brought in from all over India and central Asia. Taj Mahal is a symbol of love and is visited by millions of people every year from all over the world.

The visiting hours for Taj Mahal are sunrise to sunset. Taj Mahal remains closed on every Friday for visitors. The beauty of Taj Mahal on moonlit nights increases manifolds and leaves one mesmerized and in awe of its sheer shine like a Pearl. No words can describe its true beauty. The night visit of Taj Mahal is limited to 400 visitors per night between 20:30 to 00:30 hours. The duration of visit of 30 minutes per batch.


Other tourist attractions

The Red Fort, also called as Agra Fort, and Fatehpur Sikri are two other world heritage sites in Agra. The construction of Agra Fort was started with an intention to build a fortress. It was during the reign of King Akbar that this was converted into a palace but the beautification was done during the reign of his son Shah Jahan. Later Shah Jahan was kept there as a prisoner by his son and he died in the fort. The Taj Mahal can be viewed from the Red Fort.

Mathura and Vrindavan are the places that can also be visited during your visit to Agra. These cities are among the major pilgrimage places for Hindus and are associated with Lord Krishna. They have beautiful temples. Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is also worth visiting where one can watch different species of resident and migratory birds.
