Five Ayruvedic Ways to Fight the Cold and Flu Season
Typical symptoms of Cold and Flu include cough, sore throat, runny nose, sneezing, and fever, and while most people get better in about seven to ten days, some symptoms can last up to three weeks or longer.
While the science is not clear, it is generally thought that susceptibility to viral infection occurs during this time due to factors such as decreased humidity,which increases viral transmission rates by allowing tiny viral droplets as also due to spending a lot of time indoors thereby enhancing viral transmission. Medical science does not have too much to say about this.
As per Ayurveda, there are few simple ways to Protect yourself during this  period:
  • Allow yourself to get enough sunlight. This does not mean that you stand in harsh sunlight for a long time, but do spend some time outdoors.

  • Avoid excessively greasy and fatty foods as also congesting foods such as flour products, dairy and sweets. This will stop the accumulation of Ama. Eat foods that are easy and quick to digest.
  • De-stress your body and mind. Go for long walks and include activities like yoga and meditation. Take some ayurvedic massages like Abhyangam.

  • Include some common herbs in your food like Ash bark, Black pepper fruit and peppermint leaf, Cinnamon leaf, Clove, etc. These are good remedies nascent symptoms.

  • Inhale some essential oils such as Fir, Pine, Cedar, Spruce, Eucalyptus, etc. You can use these by adding a few drops of oil in a pot of hot water.
