Pushkar Fair

The Pushkar Fair

The Pushkar fair is celebrated in the small town of Pushkar , located near Ajmer on the edge of Thar edge in the state of Rajasthan. The grand occasion of Pushkar fair is definitely a priceless experience for those who wish to witness the vibrant cultures and rich traditions of Rajasthan.

Rituals – Pushkar for pilgrims -

Pushkar Fair is celebrated for five days from Kartik Ekadasi to Kartik Poornima. According to Hindu calendar, Kartik Ekadasi is the 11th lunar day (ekadashi) in the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu month of Kartik, and Kartik Poornima is the full moon day or the 15th lunar day of Kartik. Kartik Poornima is considered as the main day of the Pushkar Fair.

According to the legends, it's the day when Brahma sprung up the Pushkar Lake. On this day pilgrims come in huge numbers to take a bath in the holy Pushkar lake. The two days around the full moon is regarded as the most auspicious time for bathing in the lake. There is a believe that those who bathe on the day of the full moon are said to receive special blessings.

Celebrations -

Every year Pushkar fair is celebrated with great vigor by the tribals from Thar desert featuring live performances by musicians and dancers for merry making and rejoicing. The highlight is definitely the camel races, although the comical beauty contests featuring skillfully adorned and shaved camels is also delightful. There's temple dancing, folk & classical music, and arts & crafts bazaar as well featuring the culture.
