Ayurveda Medicines

The notion that Ayurveda prescribes only medicines of herbal origin is totally baseless though it is true that herbs are a major source of vast majority of medicines. Medicinal plants and herbs are grown naturally and provided by THE ALMIGHTY to the mankind, which contains substances known to ancient and modern civilizations for their healing properties. Allopathic drugs contain a single active substance made synthetically which is not natural and it is foreign to the body. On the contrary, herbs in its natural form provide a broad array of catalyst which work together harmoniously in the body.

The Development of chemistry and particularly of the synthesis of organic compounds took place only in the 19th century. Until then, in the whole world, the sole source of medicine was only medicinal plants and herbs, which were curing on man’s ailments. Among these traditional and natural medicines Siddha and Ayurveda plays dominant role and these are glorious gifts of mankind rewarded by the Mother Nature.

“Eco Friendly”, “Return to Mother Nature”, “Living Naturally” and “Nature Loving” are the slogans heard everywhere. Now these are the need of the hour too. Owing no life time side effects and discomforts over using Allopathic medicines, the whole world community is ‘somehow’ thinking off returning to the Mother Nature.

Also Ayurveda prescribes mineral products like gold, silver, lead, tin, diamond, copper, iron, sulphur, alum, mica, zinc etc. after thorough purification, triturating and turning them to Bhasmas which have not been proved as yet harmful. Apart from these minerals, many animal products like ghee, butter, animal urine, horns, and skin, flesh-mutton, coral, pearl, conch are also used as medicines wherever necessary. Therefore it is merely herbal medicine.

Is there any research in Ayurveda?

A research base is essential for every positive human endeavor. This is more true of any medical system as it relates to such vital aspects of human life as health, sickness and death. Ayurveda system of medicine was developed well before the beginning of the era of modern scientific methods of research. A significant step is providing a scientific base made in the year 1969, when the Government constituted the following Central council for research of Indian Medicines:

1. Central Council for Research in Indian Medicine and Homeopathy

2. Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha

With the ever expanding eco-system, namely, 2200 hospitals, close to 400,000 doctors and over 8000 pharmacies manufacturing Ayurveda drugs, this an ongoing process.
